Dear Principal,
All secondary school students and teachers are invited to take part in the 2009 Sustainable Living Challenge. The Challenge gives voice and recognition to the diverse sustainability education projects happening in Australian schools, and supports leading practice for sustainability education.
The Sustainable Living Challenge is the leading national secondary schools program that encourages students and teachers to explore sustainability issues as part of their school experience. The University of NSW Built Environment delivers this prestigious national program in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program and the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
New for 2009
We created five new categories, and Champions of sustainability will be selected on the basis of how projects demonstrate a vision for a sustainable future.
The categories for submission are as follows:
Built Environment – This category rewards outstanding student and group design projects relating to the built environment. Projects may cover areas such as building design, urban design (sustainable cities) and materials use.
Open Spaces – This category focuses on ideas that encourage better design of outdoor spaces in our cities, villages, communities, schools, etc.
Green Product Design – Concept and process are keys for success in this category. Students are encouraged to undergo a design process in evolving a concept, product or device as a technological aid to sustainable living.
Vision for the Future – This category recognises innovative ideas and solutions for the future of our communities – anything from community events and environmental activism, to transport solutions and ideas for everyday living.
Sustainable Schools – (Whole school projects only) This category encourages outstanding initiatives and contributions that schools are making towards sustainability through greening their curriculum and operations.
Individuals, groups or whole schools may submit projects in any of the first four categories. The fifth, Sustainable Schools, is open only to whole school projects. It is possible a submitted idea may fall into more than one category. Each project may only win in one category, but may enter into more than one if relevant.
Getting your school’s efforts recognised
Many schools, teachers and students are already doing amazing work addressing both local and global sustainable living challenges. By entering the Sustainable Living Challenge, you have the opportunity to profile your work within your school and local community. Each student that participates in the challenge receives a certificate of recognition. Leading practice projects will be identified as Sustainable Living Champions and supported to celebrate their achievements locally, including publicity.
Getting your teaching efforts recognised
By submitting your sustainability teaching programs or resources to our free online database www.teachsustainability.com.au, teachers have the opportunity to be recognised as innovative educators and to become Sustainable Living Champions. Taking the time to submit to this database helps to build a great resource for the growing community of teachers committed to educating for sustainable development. Teachers that submit their own teaching resources will receive a professional certificate of recognition, and the most innovative teaching program(s) will receive the Teach Sustainability Award.
Project submissions must be received by the last Friday in October (30 October 2009) so don’t miss out!
Best regards
