The compost is taken every day at Lunch 2 from the Science staffroom. A table will be set up soon so people can nominate when they can easily see what times are available and easily list their names.

Weekly reports:

Term 1

Week 11

We fed the worms everyday and made sure that there is enough food to last the holidays.

Term 2

Week 1

Summary: There was no compost on either day

Week 2

We fed the worms everyday and made sure that there is enough food. Also we checked the conditions inside to make sure that it isn’t too wet or too dry.

Week 3

We fed the worms, changed the internal conditions and made sure that there was enough food to eat (and not too much!!!).

Week 4

The compost bin started to fill with food scraps, so we are making sure that there isn’t too much food for the worms!!!

Week 5

This week, we got the most compost ever, almost everyday, the lids are exploding. Therefore, we are not going to feed the worms for around a week to let them digest the sprouting onions and of course the 'VERY JUICY,' lemons!!! (there are 4 lemons in there)! :O

Week 6

This week, due to an overloading of compost in the compost bins, we've decided to stop feeding the worms for a week and see how well they consume the food. Unfortunately, the science staff forgot to stop giving us compost so I had to take it on Thursday morning as the smell started to get unpleasant.

Week 7

This week, we basically stopped compost to allow the worms to digest the food already in there. Mrs Hofler stirred the contents on Friday and we should be resuming next week.

Week 8

This week, we resumed compost and the worms seems to be doing quite well. There also seems to be a moderate overflowing of compost in the bin (hope the worms don't suffocate from all the compost!). The compost was absolutely revolting- bacon rashers!!! Unfortunately the lid fell in and no one wants to take it out.

Week 9

This week, we've only taken the compost at the start of the week because the compost bin was getting quite full and also we couldn't find enough time to do it. The science staff says that the stench was terrible.

Week 10

This week, we took the compost nearly everyday and there were mostly lemon peels. The compost bin is so full that we won't have to worry about it for the whole of the holidays, as the worms won't starve to death!

Term 3

Week 1

Project Name: Compost
Project Leader: Ke Sun and Edwin Lai (Co-leader/ assistant)
Week: 1A, Term 3
Summary: This week, we fed worms and made sure that there is enough food. We also made sure that the environment was not too dry. Although, when we did compost on Friday, the lid had came off and rain was pouring into it. This week, we have a new member “Saroop!”

Week 2

Project Name: Compost
Project Leaders: Ke Sun and Edwin Lai (Co-leader/ assistant)
Week: 2B, Term 3
Summary: This week, the compost has been taken every week and all members have taken the compost at least once. The worms seem to be quite happy with plenty of food, moisture and air. As the weather has started to improve, we aren’t worrying about whether the compost bin is getting too wet!

Project Name: Compost
Project Leader(s): Ke Sun and Edwin Lai (Co-leader/ assistant)
Week: 3A, Term 3
Summary: This week, the compost was taken everyday to ensure that the worms have enough food to consume. The compost bin seems to be doing quite well with a reasonable amount of worms squirming around. On the contrary, there were many unwanted spiders in the green house. Many spider webs, but luckily there’s a broom to help us!!!

Week: 4B, Term 3
Summary: This week, we only took compost two times as many of us were busy at lunch and there wasn’t enough time. We would try and take it everyday next week. Although, the compost on Friday seems quite nutritious and the worms are doing very well!

Summary: This week, we continued to take compost everyday and the compost bin seems to be doing quite well. We had lots of tea leaves recently and corn flakes!!! Apparently there is a special flower behind the compost bin that produces flower in spring.

No one took compost on Wednesday or Thursday as the whole group had an environmental Expo and there was a teacher’s strike on Thursday. The worms seem to be doing quite well and there are a lot of flies!!!

Week 10

Project Name: Compost
Project Leader(s): Ke Sun and Edwin Lai (Co-leader/ assistant)
Week: 10B, Term 3
Summary: This week, being the last week, was quite a mess!!! As always, we’re lazy on Monday and some of us had engineering bridges to build during lunch. On Tuesday, the meeting took up all of lunch. On Wednesday and Thursday, it seems that Mr Harris was working in the green house so he took the keys, therefore we had to find him to get the keys which we never did. On Friday, the only day in the week that we took compost, we found him. YAY! In the office and all was well, maybe, except for the absolutely overflowing amount of compost that consisted of only banana peels!!! It was a good end to the term with plenty of food for the worms!!!

Week: 3A, Term 4
Summary: This week, due to multiple reasons, the compost was only taken on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The worms seems to be in quite a healthy state, although the greenhouse looks as if it was struck by an earthquake!!! The green cover has fallen over and therefore hindering the way in through the hydroponics making the green house more difficult to access.

Summary: This week, after notifying the science department of a shortage of compost, we were able to continue taking compost to the compost bin so that the worms would not starve. As it is close to the end of year, we need to make sure that there is enough compost for the worms to digest over the long holidays.

GROUP IS FULL

Our goals

Our goals this year are:

  • To expand our compost source. The science staff are not eating enough fruits and vegetables. Therefore our supply of compost is limited. This is not good as we are planning to expand our compost bins and grow more worms. Therefore there are many steps which we need to do:
    1. To give each staffroom a short survey on what they ate/ going to eat that day for recess and lunch. The information received would gives us information on which staff room is reliable for compost.
    2. In some situations where all of the staff are not eating any fruits/vegetables, we might go around the school with a plastic bag and collect compost to substitute (e.g. From Canteen, other students or our lunch).
    3. After more compost sources are found, we need to start gathering information on what type of container is suitable to grow worms
    4. Finally, we will see in which part of the school is a compost bin most suitably placed. e.g. in the green house, beside the hydroponics
