EnviroDocs is a cross-curricular, multi-disciplinary project that will develop teaching/educational materials about environmental themes. The documentaries will be developed by students in the North Sydney Local Government Area. Themes will be determined by students; facilitated by academics and representatives from government and non-government organisations. The project will involve working with resident teachers and departments within schools as well as external tutors/facilitators.

A discussion forum on this project can be found HERE

Each ‘microdoc’ will be between 3-5 minutes in length and will be able to be used within schools and wider contexts. The microdocs will be disseminated through a variety of media to local, state, national and international venues e.g. connected classrooms via video conferencing; wikis; school websites etc.

Feel free to join us at the following time. Most meetings will be held on Friday afternoons and filming will take place then and on weekends. You can join a group at any time during the project!

NOVEMBER 19 UPDATE

A lot has been been happening with EnviroDocs this week. We've been filming in Sydney Harbour National Park; mentoring at Lane Cove West Public School and a smoking ceremony at Monte San Angelo. Michael Bates will be looking at the footage; make a few copies and then you will be able to edit the film at home. WATCH THIS SPACE!

Executive Producer

Film maker, Michael Bates, will be running workshops to develop all production skills and oversee/executive produce the making of each documentary, whilst allowing the students to lead their productions with the skills that they are developing. Michael Bates is a multi award winning film maker.

Apart from Michael’s own films, he has recently worked for the NSW Department of Conservation and Climate Change (DECC) on a documentary project involving indigenous youth in the Pilliga scrub, to develop their leadership skills with regard to care for the environment. Michael also worked on a project supported by Cronulla Municipal Council after the Cronulla Riots called "Junk Theory", to facilitate positive community action to recover from such events.

Producers

  • Anna Messariti (ABC Radio National & Independent Filmmaker)
  • Fiona McCrossin (Environment Committee Coordinator North Sydney Boys' High)

The project seeks the following students/teachers/educators

  • Visual Arts: to assist with the development of design concept and realisation
  • Music: to develop and realise soundtracks
  • Science, English: to research environmental themes as determined by student working groups
  • IT skills: to develop web venue
  • Languages: to develop subtitles

In order to create the microdocs, students will need to develop their conceptual skills for media-making, undertake scriptwriting workshops, learn production skills and manage their own projects.
They will develop the core skills needed to undertake the project as a larger group and then break into small groups to embark on the microdocs projects.

Equipment sought for project realisation

The documentaries will be achieveable using technologies such as high definition video camera equipment and digital editing programs. This equipment may be accessible within the school communities involved in the project. Alternatively, the students may need to seek the equipment from other sources.
