Walk Against Warming Saturday 12th December 1pm Martin Place
On Saturday 12th December there will be a coordinated walk to raise awareness about global climate change.
This day has been chosen to coincide with the international climate treaty that is being negotiated during this week in Copenhagen. This treaty will replace the Kyoto Protocol that expires in 2012.
It is vital that our leaders understand that we are concerned about this issue and we want to send them a strong message that we want to cut emissions to a safe level.
A safe level of CO2 in the atmosphere is 350ppm (parts per million) .We are currently at 390. So we have some work to do.
The rally is being organised by the Nature Conservation Council and more details can be found on their website www.nccnsw.org.au or at www.350.org
Our group, North Shore Climate Action, is promoting the walk to all but particularly high school groups as a positive fun way that the students can get involved in the debate. It is a peaceful, non political walk aimed at raising awareness. We feel that there is so much negative news about the climate and children are getting quite anxious about it. This will give students a feeling that they can make a difference and their voices are important.
Students are encouraged to make their own banners and signs so they can express their views. Perhaps this could be part of students’ community service hours?
For students on the North Shore we will be walking from 12pm from the steps to the bridge to join the main group in the city at 1pm. Sky blue is the official colour and our theme is “Here comes the Sun”.
We will be handing out free sun flowers on the day for North Shore walkers.
If you would like anymore information then please contact Janet.

Send Indigenous and Pacific Delegates to the UN!
This year the AYCC has had a great year. We’ve organised Power Shift – Australia’s first national youth climate summit. We’ve run Youth Decide, where over 37,000 young people voted for the world they want to inherit.
Now we’re taking all our hard work, and the results of Youth Decide, and going to the UN!
We’ll be sending 20 young Australians to the most crucial international negotiations of our time – the UN climate talks in Copenhagen this December.
Our delegation includes two indigenous Australians, as well as young people from the Pacific Islands who are already facing the impacts of climate change.
We will be asking governments around the world to accept the results of Youth Decide and commit to a good global climate agreement.
It’s extremely important that young Pacific Islands and indigenous people are represented at these negotiations.
Your fundraised money will be going to two young indigenous delegates, who have been selected to take part in the UN negotiations because of their previous involvement in youth and climate issues and their exceptional leadership qualities. They are also supported by their communities.
We are also planning on helping to send Pacific Island youth to the UN – through Project Survival Pacific.
It is extremely important that indigenous and Pacific Islanders are represented at this conference – as these communities are some of the most vulnerable to climate change in the world, and are already feeling the impacts of increased drought, rising sea levels, changed weather patterns, increased flood and more.

Phil Enright, National Coordinator, Australian Recycled Pack" <ua.gro.cra|ofni#ua.gro.cra|ofni>
To the Principal,
Your students could WIN up to $10,000 for your School, simply by creating a
Play or Film to show how all of us need to change to achieve a sustainable
environment for our future.
Creatively employ humor, drama, satire or music, or a combination of any,
to take the message in your 'work' to your school and wider communities,
and you will 'Make a Difference'.
All great creative works driving change have had their beginnings in good
research.
Research the competing interests of the big retailers, their supplier
manufacturers, government, media, and the consumers of today and tomorrow;
all have their own different priorities and ways of achieve them — their
competing interests.
For decades, the environment has been the looser. The winds of change are
blowing. Portraying self interest, in contrast with the community interest,
will accelerate the understanding process, and with it, the winds of change
will gather strength.
Your school's play or film needs to have its audience leaving the 'theatre'
wanting more change faster, with a clear understanding of who and what are
changing for the better; as well as knowing who and what are holding us
back from achieving the sustainable development, our survival demands.
Invite your community and its leaders to the screening of your film or your
play's performance.
Make the premiere the most successful mouthpiece for a sustainable
environment your community have experienced.
Find interesting ways to depict the behaviors we all need to adopt, 'sing
out' the slogans you want brought to life, select local celebrities or
community leaders to get even more attention for our messages. Have it
captured and told in all the media of your choice.
The ARC Schools Competition makes a real difference.
The ARC National Schools Competition has been the central activity of the
ARC recycled cartonboard packaging campaign since it started its life in
1994. At that time, cartonboard was the only primary grocery packaging that
was made largely from recycled waste.
The success of Australian school children in making a difference is proven
by industry now also using aluminum (64%) and some plastic (21%) and glass
(35%) packaging.
Switching to Australian recycled packaging not only promotes recycling and
saves Australian jobs, it also takes away the market for High Conservation
Value Forests, the habitat of such endangered species as the Sumatran
Tiger.
To get started, visit the ARC web site www.arc.org.au for more background
information, ideas and Conditions of Entry.
All entries (the DVD of your Film or Play, and any media coverage you've
received) must be in the mail to The Australian Recycled Cartonboard
Campaign, PO Box 980, Fortitude Valley, Qld 4006 by 5pm Friday 17
September, 2010.
To register your school's entering the Competition, please fax or email
your contact details to ua.gro.cra|ofni#ua.gro.cra|ofni OR Fax 07-32681262 and we'll
send to you further information to assist your entry.

Right now, carbon levels are much too high and scientists have determined that the safe level is 350 parts carbon per million. 350 is an event that is designed to increase awareness for that fact, climate change being the big picture.
This will be another project that NSB and NSG will work together. Already we have begun exchanging ideas and we want more people to participate in order to gain more ideas for this.

YOUth DECIDE
http://www.youthdecide.com.au/About-Us/Vote-information.aspx
HI everyone. The following was sent to me when I signed up for YOUth Decide. We need a team to work on this. NSG are working on this too. Let's collaborate. Ms McCrossin (29/08/09)
Thanks so much for signing up for YOUth Decide '09, the first ever national youth vote on climate change.
YOUth Decide '09 is our best chance to send the government a strong message that youth want a say in their future - before it’s too late.
The vote aims to let our government know what really matters to us - safeguarding our future. It's about fighting for our future, as well as the future of those people in countries that will be most affected by climate change yet have the least resources to deal with it.
Between 14th - 20th September this year we hope to see hundreds of voting events held across the country. This will only happen if people like you make it happen! You can check out more about local events on http://www.youthdecide.com.au/Get-Involved/Hold-a--Local-Event-.aspx and we'll be in touch soon.
Remember to check out our latest videos and blogs from the campaign on http://www.youthdecide.com.au

National Tree Day on Sunday 2nd August: message from NS Council
Dear Bushcarer,
Once again the North Sydney Council Bushland Team is organising a big tree planting
event for National Tree Day on Sunday 2nd August! This time we are greening up a section in Primrose Park, Cremorne. The planting site is situated on the corner of Young St & Denos Lane.
We would like to extend an invitation to all our volunteers, your neighbours, grandchildren and everybody to come along and help plant the-more-than 3000 tubestock! Can you help us get others involved by letting them know?
It's a great opportunity to promote your Bushcare group activities, get to know other volunteers and help raise awareness about our beautiful bushland.
We are also looking for some keen volunteers to help at theregistration table, cook a tasty BBQ and provide planting advice to those who have come along to be a part of this fun annual event.
So if you're coming along to enjoy National Tree Day, please register by emailing ua.vog.wsn.yendyshtron|yenbed.hterag#ua.vog.wsn.yendyshtron|yenbed.hterag
and
if you are interested in helping us to run the day (setting up, registrations, cooking, planting advice etc), please let Gareth know as soon as possible.
Here's a link for more information! Download the flyer and stick it up at a location near you.

Look forward to hearing from you and seeing you there!

Why History Matters: The Past in the Present
Does history matter? How does the past shape the present? Should history play a role in shaping politics today? How do studies of race and slavery, the American Civil War, Guantanamo Bay, the ANZACs and the Stolen Generations affect the way we see ourselves, and others? Leading visiting American academics join former Premier of NSW Bob Carr and others in an open discussion on these and other issues.

Extremophiles and Exoplanets
6.30pm Tuesday 21 July 2009
Jill Tarter
Since life-as-we-know-it is so extraordinarily hardy, might it exist today (or in the past) on any of the exoplanets that are being found? A group of scientists known as astrobiologists are trying to answer that question. It might even turn out that our first indication of another inhabited world will be the signals deliberately generated by its inhabitants.

The Rebirth of Nature and the Climate Crisis
6.30pm, Tuesday 7 July
Clive Hamilton
In recent times a new theory of a living Earth has captured imaginations. According to James Lovelock’s Gaia hypothesis, the Earth is a living system in which the biosphere interacts with other physical components of the Earth to maintain conditions suitable for life. To prevent climate catastrophe, do we need a shift to a new consciousness, one based on a rediscovery of the idea of a living Earth?
