Eligibility for Leadership Positions at North Sydney Boys High School
North Sydney Boys High School (NSBHS) is a community of learners. We are committed to offering our boys an all-rounded education, including opportunities to access enrichment and community service activities using the facilities of the school and the expertise of our staff.
At NSBHS we nurture the leader within each boy to enable him to positively contribute to his community and to be involved in the life of the school beyond the classroom through our enrichment activities.
Students aspiring to leadership positions within the school, including Prefects or the SRC, are required to participate in enrichment programs and in community service activities. Moreover, as with all leadership positions, the highest standards of behaviour are essential.
1 Enrichment Programs
Students should select at least one enrichment activity each year from Year 7 and maintain this information in student portfolios.
Below are examples of enrichment opportunities at NSBHS:
• Public Speaking
• Debating
• Music ensembles
• Robotics
• Duke of Edinburgh
• Falcon Sport
• Clubs eg chess
• Committees
• Volunteer to support staff or student initiatives
Students need to have their enrichment activity verified and signed by the teacher coordinator.
To be eligible for the above student leadership positions a student must complete a minimum number of hours of enrichment activities:
Year 7: 30 mins per week
Year 8: 45 mins per week
Year 9: 45 mins per week
Year 10: 60 mins per week
Year 11: 60 mins per week
2 Community Service
Belonging to and serving our community is a core value for all students at NSBHS. By contributing to our community our boys gain an understanding of social justice. They develop a sense of place in society and understand where they can best make a difference today and in their future lives. The boys gain valuable experiences that help develop values, empathy and respect.
Prospective student leaders are expected to present a portfolio of these activities that reflect their interest and participation in community affairs. This portfolio will be reviewed prior to a nomination being accepted for leadership positions within the school.

Community service activities are those performed to benefit at least one unrelated person and for which students receive no payment.
• The work undertaken by students must be under the auspices of an organisation (e.g. NSBHS, hospital, nursing home or charity). Helping a friend or neighbour typically does not count towards the requirement.
• Service to benefit for-profit businesses (e.g. most day-care centres) is not applicable to this program.
• Community service for which students receive a TAFE or other academic credential (e.g. independent study or the community service course) is also not applicable to this program.
Community service activities may be performed at any time. Students may perform one activity or participate in many activities. Service activities may be performed after school, evenings, weekends and holiday periods.
To be eligible for the above student leadership positions a student must complete a minimum number of hours of community service activities:
Year 7: 10 hours
Year 8: 10 hours
Year 9: 10 hours
Year 10: 15 hours
Year 11: 20 Hours
Students are encouraged to organise their own placements and projects, individually, with friends or with a club. In most cases students will need to telephone the sponsoring organisation/contact person to arrange the community service activity.
Students need to have their community service verified and signed by the organisation. A contact phone number for this organisation should also be provided for the school to verify the service.
Once students have performed the service they must maintain the completed form in a portfolio that should be handed to either Deputy Principal prior to nominating for Prefect or senior SRC.

• No involvement in the Level System from Level 3 and above since the beginning of Year 10
