Hi everyone,

This Friday will be our LAST collection of the year - yay!

On Wednesday, I will need as many people as possible, during sport, to come and help me finish up commingling recycling so we can organise a pick up before the end of term.

We dont want the rubbish to rot over a 6 week holiday!

I will be asking for names on Tuesday, but please feel welcome to add your name (to the Friday collection at the top, or the Wednesday collection next post)!

Thanks,
Justin

I'm going overseas on that day if I haven't already told you so , so MUCH UNFORTUNATELY I CAN'T BE THERE FOR GREEN DAY :( i'm so sad! sounds so exciting. you must must tell me all about it ! is there anything you need me to do that can be done prior to the day or something?

A request from Ms Lamble

My comments are addressed mainly to the School To Work Committee, but anyone in Yr 10 or 11 who is interested in lending a hand would be welcome:

1. 7Y to do weed identification and removal on Friday 11 Dec, period 3 and some planting.
2. Every lunchtime, I have called for volunteers from Yr 7 to plant more new plants in the spaces in the gardens.
3. The SEMP needs further work. I suggest Thursday 10 Dec could be a great day to get together. I can take the whole day to finish the SEMP and you might like to join me at some stage. Let me know if you can attend, to set goals and devise action plans
Details of these events:

1. In period 3, Friday Dec 11 (Green Day) I have organised 7Y Science class to come out into the garden to identify weeds. After we give them a chat about how to identify the weeds, we'll pull some out, near the car park.
Then, with the spare time left, they can plant the new plants that I have ordered today.

Under the rules of the North Sydney Girls Grant, the education of junior students about weed identification and weed removal was part of the deal. So, we need to do it! Photos will be evidence.
It would be good if we laminated the weeds we collected months ago and arranged them on the walls too… but we might not have time to do this until last week of school.

I think Friday is Presentation Day rehearsal. Not sure how many of you can get out to help me.
Any of you are welcome to assist! (Please email ua.ude.wsn.ted|elbmal.ainat#ua.ude.wsn.ted|elbmal.ainat if you'd like to help!)

North Sydney Boys has been working with extreme enthusiasm on the concept of removing plastic from our school. Now this seems like a near impossible task taking in the many factors, such as plastic wrap for lunch and plastic bottles for water. However, the environment committee has been beavering away in an attempt to achieve the success. Currently in the planning stages, we have discussed many ideas on our forum, which you might hear more about later, researched them, and come out with, literally, pages of ideas. We sorted through them to find a few of the, more ideal ones. Edward will discuss two of the most prominent.

This is my part, I'm not certain whether it's too long, too short. Some constructive criticism would be nice =]

oh wait, we've already done stuff, I saw "environmental" under community service, so envirodocs would count. :D

miss does this program start in 09 or '10?

cause we'd have to work pretty fast to organise community service placements in the one weekend left…

hopefully it starts next year.

Worm Farm was successfully set up today thanks to Mrs. Hofler. Worms are in place, eating, munching and doing their business.
There should be enough food in there to last them the summer holidays as long as we keep them hydrated long enough for them to make their own water!

We need to discuss how to implement this next year. Please post your ideas.

Note: No citrus, fruit and vegetable products are OK, no meats, no oily food.

My Thoughts
Trial Science Staffroom first
Trial Other School Departments early next year
Trial Neutral Bay Public School
If this is successful, then we could consider bringing it to the whole school.

Mobile phone recycling has become extremely popular now and there is a massive market for recycling mobile phones and other types of electrical gadgets online. Is it Recycle mobile phones for cash can be a good idea to get rid of the old mobile phones?

Eligibility for Leadership Positions at North Sydney Boys High School
North Sydney Boys High School (NSBHS) is a community of learners. We are committed to offering our boys an all-rounded education, including opportunities to access enrichment and community service activities using the facilities of the school and the expertise of our staff.
At NSBHS we nurture the leader within each boy to enable him to positively contribute to his community and to be involved in the life of the school beyond the classroom through our enrichment activities.
Students aspiring to leadership positions within the school, including Prefects or the SRC, are required to participate in enrichment programs and in community service activities. Moreover, as with all leadership positions, the highest standards of behaviour are essential.
1 Enrichment Programs
Students should select at least one enrichment activity each year from Year 7 and maintain this information in student portfolios.
Below are examples of enrichment opportunities at NSBHS:

• Public Speaking
• Debating
• Music ensembles
• Robotics
• Duke of Edinburgh
• Falcon Sport
• Clubs eg chess
• Committees
• Volunteer to support staff or student initiatives

Students need to have their enrichment activity verified and signed by the teacher coordinator.
To be eligible for the above student leadership positions a student must complete a minimum number of hours of enrichment activities:

Year 7: 30 mins per week
Year 8: 45 mins per week
Year 9: 45 mins per week
Year 10: 60 mins per week
Year 11: 60 mins per week

2 Community Service
Belonging to and serving our community is a core value for all students at NSBHS. By contributing to our community our boys gain an understanding of social justice. They develop a sense of place in society and understand where they can best make a difference today and in their future lives. The boys gain valuable experiences that help develop values, empathy and respect.
Prospective student leaders are expected to present a portfolio of these activities that reflect their interest and participation in community affairs. This portfolio will be reviewed prior to a nomination being accepted for leadership positions within the school.
Examples of Community Service Activities

Cultural & Historical:
• Museum Guide/Aide
• Charitable theatrical and musical performances
Education:
• Classroom or teacher’s assistant over sustained period of time (eg 6 months)
• Library or Office Assistant
Environment:
• Recycling projects
• Conservation projects
• Habitat preservation
• Maintenance and cleanup projects
• Park service work with a local council
Social and Civic action:
• Charitable fundraising or collection drives
• Soup kitchen or shelter volunteer
• Charitable walkathons or bicycle races
• Food/clothing drives
Recreation:
• Team coach or referee
• Activity instructor
Health and Social:
• Hospital aide
• Aid for the disabled
• Nursing home assistant
• Senior citizen activities
Community Organisations:
• St Vincent de Paul
• Anglicare
• Mission Australia
• Life Line
• Salvation Army

Community service activities are those performed to benefit at least one unrelated person and for which students receive no payment.
• The work undertaken by students must be under the auspices of an organisation (e.g. NSBHS, hospital, nursing home or charity). Helping a friend or neighbour typically does not count towards the requirement.
• Service to benefit for-profit businesses (e.g. most day-care centres) is not applicable to this program.
• Community service for which students receive a TAFE or other academic credential (e.g. independent study or the community service course) is also not applicable to this program.
Community service activities may be performed at any time. Students may perform one activity or participate in many activities. Service activities may be performed after school, evenings, weekends and holiday periods.
To be eligible for the above student leadership positions a student must complete a minimum number of hours of community service activities:

Year 7: 10 hours
Year 8: 10 hours
Year 9: 10 hours
Year 10: 15 hours
Year 11: 20 Hours

Students are encouraged to organise their own placements and projects, individually, with friends or with a club. In most cases students will need to telephone the sponsoring organisation/contact person to arrange the community service activity.
Students need to have their community service verified and signed by the organisation. A contact phone number for this organisation should also be provided for the school to verify the service.
Once students have performed the service they must maintain the completed form in a portfolio that should be handed to either Deputy Principal prior to nominating for Prefect or senior SRC.
3 Behaviour Standards
Prefects are role models for the rest of the school. It is important that students aspiring to be Prefect have displayed exemplary behaviour and have striven for personal best in their academic studies.
Academic Expectations:
• No Warning Letters in any Preliminary Course
• Evidence of academic achievement and awards – report comments demonstrating excellent work ethic
Behaviour Expectations:
• No involvement in the Level System from Level 3 and above since the beginning of Year 10
• Exemplary attendance record since Year 10
• Punctuality – attend all morning classes and no unexplained lateness
• Exemplary uniform

Hey!

We're thinking of trialling a worm farm at NSB - and we're not quite sure how to do this.
Would it be possible to organise a time for some of us to go to NSG where you can give us a rundown of how your worm farm/composting systems work?

Thanks!
Justin

Have been thinking about Worm Farms for a while - thanks for your tour Miss Hofler!

The worms dont like oranges/lemons (citric acid), onions, dairy products, meat products (these stink) and oily, greasy foods - wow… thats pretty much all the school's food waste gone.

However - they do like egg shells (uhh… egg shells at NSB?), fruit and vegetable scraps (apart from citrus)

I will try and negotiate a time to tour NSG and look at how they manage their worm farm.
